Thinking About Bringing Your Dog to the Park? Start Here.
Bringing a dog to a dog park for the first time is exciting — but it can also feel a little nerve-wracking. Will they play nicely? Will they get overwhelmed? What if things don’t go smoothly?
That’s exactly why we’ve partnered with Tank Mosley and the team at Obedience Kings Dog Training— our official training partners here at Barking Barley. In this first episode of Tank’s Tips, Tank and his dog Tonka walk you through a simple, low-pressure approach to your pup’s first park experience.
Step 1: Use the On-Leash Area First
Not sure how your dog will react to all the energy of a dog park? You don’t have to go straight inside. Tank’s first tip: take advantage of the on-leash area just outside the park.
Set your dog up in a down-stay and let them simply watch. Let them soak in the sights, sounds, and smells without the pressure of direct interaction. This is called desensitization — helping your dog get comfortable with the environment at their own pace.
Step 2: Move Closer Gradually
Once your dog is relaxed and not reacting, you can slowly move closer to the fence. Let them sniff through the fence and observe the dogs inside — without forcing any interaction.
Watch the leash. Tank points out that you never want tension on the leash during a fence greeting. A tight leash can create anxiety and signal to your dog that something is wrong. Keep it loose and relaxed.
Step 3: Take It Slow — Always
Tank’s golden rule? Take it slow. There’s no rush to get inside the park. Every dog is different, and a calm, successful first visit — even if it’s just hanging outside the fence — sets the foundation for a great experience down the road.
Quick Recap: Tank’s First-Visit Tips
- Arrive early or during off-peak hours when the park is quieter
- Start in the on-leash area — no need to rush inside
- Ask for a down-stay and let your dog observe the environment
- Move closer to the fence only when your dog is calm
- Keep the leash loose during any fence greetings
- Take it slow — a calm first visit is a win
