Dog Daycare in Fredericksburg, VA: 10 Questions to Ask First
Handing over the leash is a trust thing. Whether you’re touring a big daycare, meeting a sitter down the street, or checking out a training program like our Good Dog Club, the right questions tell you a lot, fast.
Here’s what to ask, why it matters, and how we’d answer.
1. How many dogs are in a group?
Group size shapes everything: how closely your dog is watched, how rowdy play gets, and how much individual attention anyone gets. There’s no magic number, but you should get a clear one.
At the Good Dog Club: Each trainer works with no more than 10 dogs a day.
2. Is there an evaluation before the first day?
A place that takes every dog, no questions asked, hasn’t really met the other dogs either. A good evaluation protects your dog as much as anyone’s.
At the Good Dog Club: Every new dog starts with a free evaluation.
3. What do dogs need to attend?
Expect to show vaccination records at minimum. Ask about age limits and spay/neuter rules too, since they shape who your dog will be playing with.
At the Good Dog Club: A signed Barking Barley waiver, current vaccination records, at least 4 months old, spayed or neutered if over 7 months, and a passed evaluation.
4. Who’s actually with my dog all day?
Ask about the staff’s background. How do they read body language? Break up rough play? Handle a dog who’s had enough?
At the Good Dog Club: A dedicated, full-time trainer, backed by Obedience Kings Dog Training.
5. Will my dog learn anything?
This is the question most people forget. A day of play is great. A day of play that also makes your dog easier to live with is better.
At the Good Dog Club: Training is built into every day, on skills like recall, polite greetings, and focus around distractions.
6. What does a typical day look like?
Nonstop play sounds fun, but plenty of dogs get overtired and overstimulated without breaks. Look for a day with a rhythm: play, rest, repeat.
At the Good Dog Club: Off-leash play, training sessions, and downtime in the shade between them.
7. What if my dog isn’t a good fit?
Not every dog is ready for a group on day one. A good place tells you that honestly and gives you a path forward, not just a no.
At the Good Dog Club: If your dog isn’t ready for group play yet, they can work one-on-one with the trainers at Obedience Kings to build the skills they need. Once that training’s done, they’re welcome to join the Club.
8. How will I hear about my dog’s day?
Photos are nice. Specifics are better. You want to know what your dog did, not just that they had fun.
At the Good Dog Club: The Tail Report at every pick-up: what your dog practiced, how they did, who they played with, and what to work on at home.
9. Is the space built for dogs?
Look for room to run, shade, fresh water, and a way to cool off on hot days.
At the Good Dog Club: Our 6,000 sq ft off-leash park, with a splash pad, a dog playground, shade, and water.
10. How does scheduling work?
Some places are drop-in. Others hold a set spot for your dog every week. Ask about commitments and what happens when you need to change a day.
At the Good Dog Club: Club days run weekdays from 8 AM to 6 PM, so you don’t have to race out of work at 5. Your days are set when you enroll, and every plan has a six-month commitment. Need to swap a day? Give us at least 48 hours’ notice and we’ll do our best to make it work.
The question behind all ten
Do you want a place for your dog to spend the day, or a day your dog actually gets better from?
