The Perfect Dog-Friendly Weekend Escape from DC

You and your dog both deserve a weekend off. Here’s how to spend it — 55 miles south of the Beltway, in one of Virginia’s most charming, walkable, and surprisingly dog-obsessed small cities.

If you live in Washington, DC or Northern Virginia, you know the drill: you’ve got a great dog, a desperate need to get out of the city, and not enough time to drive to the mountains or the beach. Fredericksburg, Virginia is the answer you’ve been overlooking.

Just about an hour south on I-95 — less if you leave before the traffic wakes up — Historic Downtown Fredericksburg is a genuinely walkable, dog-friendly small city with a real main street, serious food and drink, a riverfront, and a dog park that also happens to be a craft beer taphouse. Yes, really.

Here’s how to do the whole weekend right.

First: Book Your Stay at The Publisher Hotel

We’ve partnered with The Publisher Hotel — one of Fredericksburg’s best boutique stays — to offer an exclusive deal for dog-loving visitors. Book a dog-friendly room through our link and you’ll get a discounted rate on your stay plus a complimentary day pass to The Barking Barley included. Your dog gets a great bed. Why Fredericksburg?

Fredericksburg doesn’t get enough credit from the DC crowd. It’s not a resort town, it’s not overhyped, and it doesn’t feel like a theme park version of a small city. It’s the real thing — a place where people actually live, eat, drink, and walk their dogs downtown on a Tuesday evening.

Fredericksburg Main Street is lined with independent shops, galleries, and restaurants housed in 18th and 19th century buildings. The Rappahannock River runs along the eastern edge of downtown. There are Civil War sites, a Saturday farmers market, and more craft beer per capita than you’d expect from a city this size.

And according to Visit FXBG, the downtown core is one of the most walkable in Virginia — which matters a lot when you’ve got a dog who has opinions about the pace of exploration.

Saturday — Day One: Arrive, Explore, and Let the Dog Run

Morning

Get on the road early and beat the I-95 misery. Fredericksburg is about 55 miles from DC and 35 from the heart of Northern Virginia — on a good morning you’re there in under an hour. Check into The Publisher Hotel, get your dog settled, and start walking.

Downtown Fredericksburg is made for this. The city is remarkably dog-friendly — the Canal Path and Rappahannock River Heritage Trail offer a peaceful 1.8-mile riverside walk with spots where your dog can wade in. Hurkamp Park in the heart of downtown is a perfect first stop, and if you hit the right Saturday, the farmers market is in full swing with dog-welcoming vendors.

Local tip: Stroll Caroline Street and Princess Anne Street for the best concentration of shops and architecture. Both are dog-friendly on the sidewalks and several spots welcome leashed dogs on their patios.

Afternoon — This Is Where It Gets Good

Make your way to 1515 Olde William Street and come find us.

The Barking Barley is a craft beer taphouse with a 6,000 square foot off-leash dog park out back — and we are exactly as good as that sounds. Your dog’s day pass is already included with The Publisher Hotel deal, so walk in, let your pup through the gate, and order a round.

We pour rotating Virginia craft beers and ciders on tap, and our signature hot dogs are named after real dogs and built for real hunger. The Walker (brown mustard, sauerkraut, pickled onions), The Riley (chili, nacho cheese, jalapeños, Fritos), The Weller (bacon crumbles, pickled onions, guacamole) — pick your poison. Your dog will be too busy making new best friends to care what you ordered.

Our Ruffarees — trained park staff — keep an eye on things so you can actually sit down, drink your beer, and watch your dog experience what can only be described as pure joy.

We’re also listed on BringFido — the go-to resource for dog-friendly travel — so you know we take the dog-friendly thing seriously.

Evening

Head back to The Publisher Hotel to clean up (and maybe rinse off your dog — the Watering Hole is a real thing and they will find it). Then head back out for dinner on Caroline Street. Fredericksburg’s restaurant scene punches well above its weight — Italian, sushi, gastropubs, farm-to-table — and several spots have dog-welcoming patios for a warm evening.

Sunday — Day Two: Slow Morning, Big History, Head Home Happy

Morning

Sunday is for sleeping in, a slow breakfast, and one more walk along the river before you pack up. If your dog still has energy after Saturday (unlikely, but possible), the Fredericksburg & Spotsylvania National Military Park has 8,000 acres of historical trails where leashed dogs are welcome. It’s a genuinely beautiful walk and the history is extraordinary — one of the most significant Civil War landscapes in the country.

Before You Go

Swing back by The Barking Barley for a Sunday afternoon pint before hitting the road. Park hours run until 9pm on weekends, and there’s no better way to end a trip than one last beer while your dog gets a few final zoomies in.

If you had a great time — and you will — consider joining The Pack. A monthly or annual membership means the next time you come down from DC or NoVA, you walk straight in like a regular. Because you will be one.
